What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent and unmanaged disease states in America. The trend in diabetes and obesity has also risen significantly over the past decade. Hence, untreated and unmanaged, patients plagued by this silent killer sometimes go years without even knowing that they have the disease. Others, who are informed about their diabetes, but due to the lack of knowledge, go on years without proper treatment and glucose control. According to recent statistics, the United States spend billions of dollars each year on the treatment and care of diabetes not just on disease state management but disease state mis-management.

What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by hyperglycemia due to abnormalities in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and protein followed by microvascular, macrovascular, and neuropathic complications. There are three types of diabetes classified as Type I (insulin dependent), Type II (non-insulin dependent), and gestational (during pregnancy). Diabetes not treated properly could lead to many complications such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney failure, vision impairment, and many other complications that will affect patient’s daily activities.
